Abstract

Patients are often unaware of the non-contraceptive benefits of hormonal contraception. and this represents an opportunity for counseling (2). A brief list of some common non-contraceptive benefits is provided in Box I.

Most hormonal contraceptives combine progestin for its contraceptive effects and an estrogen to stabilize the endometrium and reduce unwanted spocane. Users progestin-only hormonal contraceptives avoid the sile citects associated with the use of contraceptives containing estrogen. Progestin-only contraceptives often can be used in women when estrogen is contraindicated; however, unpredictable spotting may be problematic for some patients. Over time, this unwanted bleeding generally subsides and progestin-only methods may provide highly effective long-term contraception.
